Why a Code of Conduct Matters in Coffee

HERE'S A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT. A PLASTIC COMPANY DESIGNS A BOTTLE THAT'S CHEAP TO PRODUCE AND PROFITABLE TO SELL, AND WHEN THE CONSUMER IS DONE WITH IT, THE CONSUMER'S PROBLEM IS TO DEAL WITH IT. SORT IT. FIND A BIN. HOPE THE RECYCLING SYSTEM WORKS. THE COMPANY THAT CREATED THE PROBLEM HAS ALREADY MOVED ON.

THIS IS WHAT THE INDUSTRY POLITELY CALLS "CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITY." IT’S ACTUALLY A DESIGN FAILURE. THE PROBLEM WAS ALWAYS PART OF THE PRODUCT. IT WAS JUST MADE INVISIBLE BY PASSING IT DOWNSTREAM.

COFFEE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. AND CERTIFICATIONS, FOR ALL THEIR VALUE, OFTEN WORK THE SAME WAY.

THE CERTIFICATION TRAP

CERTIFICATIONS ARE USEFUL. THEY CREATE BASELINES. THEY GIVE CUSTOMERS A SHORTHAND SIGNAL FOR QUALITY OR ETHICS. WE'RE NOT DISMISSING THEM.

BUT CERTIFICATIONS ALSO CARRY A QUIET ASSUMPTION: THAT RESPONSIBILITY LIVES AT THE POINT OF PRODUCTION. GET THE FARM CERTIFIED. MEET THE CHECKLIST. PASS THE AUDIT. NOW THE PROBLEM OF SOURCING ETHICALLY IS TECHNICALLY SOMEONE ELSE'S, THE CERTIFYING BODY'S, THE STANDARD'S, THE LABEL'S.

WHAT DOESN'T GET ASKED IS: WHAT DOES THE COMPANY BUYING THE COFFEE ACTUALLY BELIEVE? HOW DO THEY THINK? WHAT ARE THEY ACCOUNTABLE TO, BEYOND THE LABEL?

A CERTIFICATION ANSWERS THE QUESTION OF COMPLIANCE. A CODE OF CONDUCT ANSWERS THE QUESTION OF CHARACTER.

CIRCULARITY IS A MINDSET, NOT A SUPPLY CHAIN FEATURE

THE PLASTIC COMPANY FAILED AT DESIGN THINKING. IT WAS DESIGNED WITHOUT CONSIDERING WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. CIRCULARITY, REAL CIRCULARITY, MEANS YOU OWN THE FULL LOOP. YOU THINK ABOUT THE BOTTLE, THE RECYCLING SYSTEM, THE MATERIAL IT BECOMES, AND THE NEXT PRODUCT IT ENABLES. YOU DON'T HAND THE LOOP OFF AND CALL IT RESPONSIBILITY.

APPLIED TO COFFEE, THIS MEANS THAT HOW YOU SOURCE A BEAN IS INSEPARABLE FROM HOW THE FARM IS DOING FIVE YEARS FROM NOW, HOW THE FARMER'S COMMUNITY IS DEVELOPING, HOW THE SOIL IS RECOVERING, HOW THE PACKAGING ENDS ITS LIFE, AND WHAT THE CUSTOMER UNDERSTANDS ABOUT ALL OF IT.

THESE AREN'T SEPARATE DEPARTMENTS. THEY'RE ONE SYSTEM. AND IF YOU DESIGN THAT SYSTEM WELL, IF YOU GENUINELY CLOSE THE LOOP, THEN EVERY DECISION REINFORCES THE OTHERS.

A CODE OF CONDUCT IS HOW YOU MAKE THAT DESIGN THINKING EXPLICIT.

WORDS LIKE "SUSTAINABLE" ARE DOING A LOT OF HEAVY LIFTING

THE COFFEE MARKET IS FULL OF LANGUAGE LIKE SUSTAINABLE, ETHICAL, AND HIGH QUALITY. USED WITHOUT DEFINITION, THESE WORDS LOSE MEANING.

A CODE OF CONDUCT FORCES SPECIFICITY: WHAT DO WE PAY, HOW DO WE VERIFY, WHAT DO WE MEASURE?

SPECIFICITY IS ACCOUNTABILITY. AND ACCOUNTABILITY IS WHAT SEPARATES A VALUE FROM A TALKING POINT.
